Mastercard Foundation- Young Africa Works

About Organization: The Mastercard Foundation seeks a world where everyone has the opportunity to learn and prosper. All people, no matter where their starting point in life, should have an equal chance to succeed. We believe that with access to education, financial services, and skills training, people can have that chance. Their focus is helping economically disadvantaged young people in Africa to find opportunities to move themselves, their families, and their communities out of poverty to a better life.

The Mastercard Foundation’s new strategy, Young Africa Works, outlines how, over the next decade, we will focus on finding solutions to the youth employment challenge and reducing poverty in Africa. When young people can secure formal work and a steady wage their lives improve. Employment, particularly formal employment, is a leading pathway out of poverty for families. Using youth employment as a measure of their progress, we will work to help millions of young people find a pathway out of poverty. Their work will ensure 30 million young people in Africa, particularly young women, secure dignified and fulfilling work.

Our Partnership: The Mastercard Foundation- Young Africa Works strategy has pledged a five year partnership with in an effort to support our mission of resolving the youth unemployment issue. Ethiopia’s youth population is currently on the rise with 41% of the population under 15 years of age and more than 28% between the ages of 15 and 29. With Ethiopia’s population leaning towards the youth and making up the majority of the country, it is alarming and concerning that the youth unemployment rate of 27%, is significantly higher than the national rate leaving youth at a significant disadvantage as they graduate and begin to seek employment.
