Supporting Ethiopian Youth Find Their Next Step Through Employability Skills

(Addis Ababa, Ethiopia 29 March, 2018) Dereja, a unit of ethioJobs.net, is partnering with the Ethiopian Ministry of Education (MoE) to host the 2018 Annual Career Expo – the largest and first of its kind nationwide employer-employee event hosted in Ethiopia. The Expo will take place from 1st – 3rd October, 2018 at the Addis Ababa Exhibition Centre. The Expo will attract over 10,000 fresh graduates from all over the country and over 200 public and private institutions.

Despite the recent growth in the access to higher education in Ethiopia, there still remains a large gap between the quality of the labor market and the demands of the job market. In an effort to bridge this gap, Dereja has been partnering with the MoE as well as other change-makers to tangibly improve the employability and work-readiness of the Ethiopian youth.

One of the major outputs from this partnership with MoE is the upcoming National Career Expo. This expo is hoped to foster open dialogues between job-seekers and employers through various platforms such as a national job fair, HR seminar and interactive workshops. Prior to the expo, Dereja is working extensively with graduating students from all over the country on readying them to get the most out of the expo. During a stakeholder meeting held on March 29th, 2018, where the National Career Expo was officially announced to relevant stakeholders and members of the press, Ato Desalegn Samuel, Director Higher Education Inspection Directorate for MoE said, “This National Career Expo is a great platform to connect our fresh graduates with potential employers. What’s more, it will have a significant impact on meeting the target the Ministry has set for 80% of graduates to secure jobs within one year upon graduation.”

The National Career Expo is one of many initiatives undertaken by Dereja to address the youth unemployment rate in Ethiopia. According to Ms. Siham Ayele, Project Manager for Dereja, “Every year, hundreds of thousands of students graduate from higher education institutions across the country with inadequate job-search and career development skills and aptitudes. This has led to insufficient quality candidates for employers, and frustration and unemployment for the youth. To this end, Dereja offers solutions to bridge the gap between fresh graduates and employers through the launching of Career Centres within universities all over the country, career counselling training, posting relevant jobs and internship opportunities as well as providing resources to enhance students ability to develop a satisfying career path.”

Dereja.com, a unit of Ethiojobs.net, is an online platform created with the aim of increasing the employability of Ethiopian youth by creating access to structured professional development resources to bridge the gap between the labour and the job market. Dereja aims to provide guidance tools and resources for fresh graduates, students and junior level professionals by way of career centres in public universities, trainings and counselling services and annual job fairs. It also works with employers and institutions to make the workplace culture in the country adaptable to the labour market of the 21st century.
